Torrent Terminology

.Torrent file :

A .torrent file is a file that includes the  metadata about all the files it makes downloadable, including their names and sizes and checksums of all pieces in the torrent. It also contains the address of a tracker that coordinates communication between the peers in the swarm.

Tracker :

A tracker is a server that keeps track of which seeds and peers are in the swarm.

Seeder/Seed :

A Seeder or Seed is a is a peer that has an entire copy of the torrent and offers it for upload. The more seeders there are, the better the chances of getting a higher download speed.

Peer:

A peer is a BitTorrent client running on a computer on the Internet to which other clients connect and transfer data. a peer is usually one with incomplete data.

Leech :

A leech is a client who is downloading the file from the network. In some cases leech is the term used for clients with a negative impact on the system i.e. the ones who download the files but avoid having them as a seed ,thus affecting the over all share-ratio.

Share-ratio:

A user’s share ratio for any individual torrent is a number determined by dividing the amount of data that user has uploaded by the amount of data they have downloaded. Final share ratios over 1 carry a positive connotation in the BitTorrent community, because they indicate that the user has sent more data to other users than they received. Its based on the original concept of BitTorrent ‘Sharing’. The more you Share the better are your chances of getting a better download speed.

Piece :

Well this refers to the number of  pieces that the torrent file has been divided into.

Health :

Health of a torrent is shown in a bar or in % usually next to the torrents name and size, on the site where the .torrent file is hosted. It shows if all pieces of the torrent are available to download.

Hash

The hash is a string of alphanumeric characters in the .torrent file that the client uses to verify the data that is being transferred. It contains information like the file list, sizes, pieces, etc. Every piece received is first checked against the hash. If it fails verification, the data is discarded and requested again. The ‘Hash Fails’ field in the torrent’s General tab shows the number of these hash fails.

Client

The program that enables p2p file sharing via the BitTorrent protocol.

Availability

The number of full copies of the file available to the client. Each seed adds 1.0 to this number, as they have one complete copy of the file. A connected peer with a fraction of the file available adds that fraction to the availability.
Now lets see some common terms related with Movie Torrent files.
CAM:
A cAM is actually a theater rip usually done with a digital video camera. These are usually of worst quality and first to be released by pirates as soon as the movie is released in theaters.Sound is taken from the on board microphone of the camera, and especially in comedies, laughter can often be heard during the film. The distortion in sound and picture quality can be easily seen.
TELESYNC (TS):
A telesync is quite same as a CAM the only difference being that its recorded using an external audio device usually an audio jack.
SCREENER (SCR):
A pre-release VHS tape,is  sent to rental stores, and various other places for promotional use. A screener is supplied on a VHS tape, and is usually in a 4:3 (full screen) , although letter boxed screeners are sometimes found. The main draw back is a “ticker” (a message that scrolls past at the bottom of the screen, with the copyright and anti-copy telephone number). Also, if the tape contains any serial numbers, or any other markings that could lead to the source of the tape, these will have to be blocked, usually with a black mark over the section. This is sometimes only for a few seconds, but unfortunately on some copies this will last for the entire film, and some can be quite big. Depending on the equipment used, screener quality can range from excellent if done from a MASTER copy, to very poor if done on an old VHS recorder through poor capture equipment on a copied tape.
R5:

These usually contain no special feature. R5 relates to a Region 5 DVD format created by the movie industry to help combat pirates, as well as tags used by movie pirates for distribution on the Internet. The movie industry created this format in efforts to help prevent piracy by producing higher quality Telecine transferred movies than pirates can offer on the Internet. This higher quality is achieved by the use of professional grade film transfer devices as opposed to lesser quality equipment obtainable by movie pirates.
